(MARIETTA, OH) - Several vehicles will be going out of service and replaced quicker than expected at the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

The Board of Commissioners granted the sheriff's department $248,000 in appropriations for upgraded vehicles on Thursday.

Sheriff Larry Mincks says he originally wanted to purchase four new cruisers in 2016 and 2017, but is forced to purchase them now because of a safety recall on 12 of the 2007 and 2008 Dodge Chargers the department uses.

Commissioner Ron Feathers says the sheriff is working with C & C Dodge to have replacement parts in stalled for some of the vehicles.

"They will be taking seven vehicles out of service and (will be) purchasing a total of eight," he says.

The sheriff says evaluations of the fleet have shown the vehicles need to be retired as soon as possible due to the nine years of wear and tear they've endured, and the safety concerns they pose to deputies and others on the roads.

He says the department is adjusting the way it uses the vehicles so the next fleet's lifespan can be extended.
