MARIETTA, Ohio (May 25, 2016) - The deadline is looming for public comment on the proposed leasing of mineral rights within the Wayne National Forest in Washington, Monroe and Noble Counties. Public input will be accepted through May 31.

In late April, the Bureau of Land Management Northeastern States District released a Draft Environmental Assessment, addressing proposed oil and gas leasing of federally-managed minerals within the Wayne National Forest. The study analyzes the potential environmental impacts of leasing Federal oil and gas resources on an estimated 40,000 acres of underlying land in the Marietta Unit of the Athens Ranger District. Of the 40,000 acres being studied, about 18,000 acres are being considered for lease at this time.

The assessment does not propose to authorize any ground disturbance or hydraulic fracturing at this time.

The public is encouraged to review and comment on the assessment. Please send your comments no later than May 31, 2016, by e-mail to: blm_es_comments@blm.gov
