Commissioners discuss 911 levy option

MARIETTA (May 27, 2016) - Washington County Commissioners focused on a proposed levy to enhance and improve public 911 services at their most recent regular meeting.

The proposed five-year levy, at .35 mills, would cost the owner of a home valued at $100,000 about $13 per year.

The board has been studying the issue for 18 months in search of new revenue sources for the county's 911 centers. Commissioners say they have applied for grant funding to address the need to upgrade emergency system technology, but so far, none have been awarded.

Commissioners say the decline in the use of landline telephone and a cap on cell phone revenue has resulted in a serious crunch on the county's general fund, noting that $130,000 had to be transferred to cover the difference this fiscal year, and that gap is expected to widen if no action is taken.

The five-year levy is expected to be up for vote on November's ballot.
