MID-OHIO VALLEY (September 20, 2016) - An unusual classic watercraft bound for this weekend's RegattaFest in New Martinsville is making stops in St. Marys and Marietta Wednesday.

The Gale V Vintage Unlimited Hydroplane can be seen between 9 a.m. and noon Wednesday, September 21, in the parking lot of McDonalds in St. Marys. The boat will then be on display in the parking lot of the Lafayette Hotel in Marietta from 1 to 4 p.m.

The boat last raced in New Martinsville in 1954 and won the Imperial Gold Cup there that year. It was also the 1955 Seattle Gold Cup winner. The boat has been immaculately restored and features the original Allison 12-cylinder 1200-horse-power engine, which was used in fighter planes during World War II.

The Gale V will compete against the Miss U.S. IV, another Vintage Unlimited in a "Shoot Out" at RegattaFest on September 24 and September 25. Speeds will exceed 170 mph during this event which will determine which of the historic boats is the fastest. The Gale V and Miss U.S. IV are the last boats of this type left in the United States.
