VIENNA, West Virginia (September 27, 2016) - The Vienna Police Department's K-9 Ronin will be better protected while doing his job, thanks to a charitable donation from a non-profit called Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

The dog will receive a bullet- and stab-protective vest. Each vest is valued between $1,800 – $2,200, weighs an average of 4 to 5 pounds, and comes with a five-year warranty.

The donation came from a surplus of funds raised during a campaign to allow retired Marietta Police Department Officer Matt Hickey, to keep his K-9 partner, Ajax, upon retirement. The associated GoFundMe account reportedly raised more than $72,000 for the cause, all of which will be used to help offer better protection for K-9 units across the U.S.
