Marietta businesses are being warned of a new telephone scam.  If you business receives a phone call from a person (typically a male) claiming to be a local police officer and they encourage you to make a donation to a community cause, you are urged to hang up immediately.

The scam begins by asking for a company director by their name and then asks questions about anti-social behavior in the area.  The press rleease states that this is a tactic to display a level of knowledge in the local area to make the call seem more legitmate.

The call will then continue the conversation by asking the company if they would like to continue supporting a local police community publication with a small donation as they have done in the past.  Within 10 minutes of the original call, a second call will comein.  this is the "COLLEAGUE" to the person you were speaking with before.  They will ask for payments at this time.

The scammers have recently been challenged and they were asked for a phone number that way the business could call them back with information about their donations.  The all of the sudden "forgot their phone number."
