Skimming Retailers Take More Than Shoplifters

A new report from the progressive policy group has stated that Ohio and other states' retail employers are stealing just as much from their employees as shoplifters steal from their stores.  This was discovered by taking minimum wage theft data from the Economic Policy and comparing it to the Global Retail Theft Barometer.

The results found that employers underpaid or 'skimmed' wages worth upwards of 15 billion dollars each year between 2013 and 2015.  Shoplifters stole 14.7 billion dollars in merchandise.

The report's author, Amy Traub, says that retailers just get a slap on the wrist for wage theft.

The penalty for wage theft is simply repaying the money taken.  The report also says that shoplifters who steal are facing felony charges.

The "Wage Theft Prevention and Wage Recovery Act" would compensate wage victims with three times the amount of their stolen wages.  Traub notes that the bill has unfortunately stalled completely.

The report also says that retailers spend far more money protecting their stores from theft than the Department of Labor spends enforcing wage laws.  Back in 2015, retialer security spending was almost nine-billion dollars.  That is 39 times greater than the Department of Labor's entire Wage and Hour Division budget of about 227 millino dollars.
