Marietta College's McCoy Professor of Education Dr. Bill Bauer will give the keynote address at the State Support Team 16 Conference on Thursday, November 2nd in Chauncey, Ohio. Bauer currently serves as the Chair of the Ohio Office of Exceptional Children State Advisory Panel for Exceptional Children.

WMOA News recently spoke with Professor Bauer about what the State Support Team 16 Conference is and what goals they set out to accomplish.

"The State Support Team 16 are sponsored and funded by the Ohio Department of Education to support school districts allowing them to get the best practices and best services for all children of Kindergarten age through age 21 for all children to get knowledge, expertise, and experience in the field of disabilities."

The subject matter that Professor Bauer's address will be about is how we can help people with disabilities make transitions through different aspects of education and everyday life.

"Too many times we focus on the academic component of kids with disabilities. However, this conference focuses on what happens after a child or a young adult graduates. What we try to do at this conference is to allow kids, parents, and educators to see a variety of ways that we can have a successful transition to life after high school."

Professor Bauer is most definitely one of the most qualified people to discuss this particular topic as he knows first hand what it's like to live with a disability.

"I grew up with a severe hearing impairment which allowed me to experience first-hand what it's like to be transitioned in the education system. I also went to the Washington County Career Center which allowed me the opportunity to do both the vocational route, which also allowed me to go the college route."

Bauer hopes such conferences, discussions and action plans will help encourage more employers to give young adults with disabilities a chance to share what they can do and prompt communities to think of how valuable people with disabilities are.
