Marietta Memorial Hospital’s Wound Care Center has been
named a "Center of Distinction" by Healogics, Inc., a leading company
in the field.
The award is the result of the Center having achieved excellent
outcomes for twelve consecutive months, including patient satisfaction and
healing rates of more than 90 percent.
Over 600 patients were treated at Memorial’s Wound Care
Center last year, and that number continues to rise. Hospital spokesperson
Jennifer Offenberger explains what brings people to the Center.
“Perhaps they’re diabetic and having issues with their
skin. Perhaps they’ve been in treatment for cancer, or they might be having
other diseases that are causing them problems. Oftentimes they have wounds that
will not heal, or do not heal properly.”
Offenberger says one treatment that’s effective for many
is hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which is particularly effective for diabetic
ulcers and crush injuries.
Years ago, people simply suffered when wounds would not
heal, sometimes losing limbs or experiencing life-threatening complications.
Offenberger says facilities like the Wound Care Center
have changed those outcomes drastically.
“When you look at a 91 percent wound healing rate, you’re
looking at lives bettered.”
