CSX To Repair Busy Crossing Next Week
Posted on: 08/15/2013
By  Mike Cullums

Many local motorists have already seen the flashing sign boards in place at the west end of the Washington Street Bridge, announcing a road closure next Monday through Wednesday.

CSX confirms that the much-needed and long-awaited reconstruction of the rail crossing will take place next week. Railroad spokeswoman Carla Groleau tells WMOA News that the work will start on Monday morning and could last into next Thursday, depending on weather.

ODOT yesterday announced the official detour for "through traffic" - motorists and truckers who would normally travel from I-77 Exits 1 or 6 through Marietta and toward Belpre. The posted detour will be I-77 south to the US 50 Parkersburg Bypass to Belpre Township (or vice versa).

This morning, the city of Marietta announce a preferred local detour.  It's Gilman Avenue to Putnam Avenue to Franklin Street to Virginia Street and back to Route 7.

NOTE: For readers not familiar with the street names, the affected crossing is on State Route 7, immediately west of the Muskingum River. Local traffic can use the other river crossing in Marietta, the Putnam Bridge downtown. City streets west of the Putnam Bridge cannot handle large trucks or wide loads, thus the ODOT detour involving I-77 and US 50.
