Deputies Seek Donations for 'Cops & Kids'

The deputies of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office stay busy 24/7 assisting others. But every year in mid-November they pause and ask the community to assist them, in order to make Christmas a little brighter for needy children.
Sergeant Scott Mankins says, “Every year we take kids Christmas shopping who otherwise aren’t gonna have a Christmas. It’s called the ‘Cops and Kids’ program and we need to raise money for it.”
Mankins and his colleagues are inviting everyone to an all-day event on Tuesday, November 26, at the Original Pizza Place on Second Street in downtown Marietta.
“If anyone stops in to buy their lunch or supper," he explains, "they can just put their receipt in the blue box and we'll get 15 percent of the ticket totals."
If you can’t make it to the event and/or you'd like to help in some other way, Mankins explains how to do that.
“If folks want to make donations, we will take money! We don’t take toys because we take the kids to the store so they can pick up clothes or toys or whatever they need.
“People can call me or Lt. Jason Norman or Lt. Pat Gherke at (740) 376-7070 and we’ll be happy to let them know how to go about (donating). Or they can just stop by the Sheriff’s Office and make a check out to ‘Fraternal Order of Police Gold Star Lodge 188’ and designate it to the 'Cops and Kids' program.”
The Sheriff’s Office criminal division and dispatch center is at 309 Fourth Street in downtown Marietta.
