On Friday, Marietta city officials dedicated two plaques to folks who have contributed funding that's making some big city projects possible.
Near the east end of the Putnam Street Bridge, a sign honors the generosity of J. Francis and Lillian Strecker Smith who helped to fund the Rivertrail bike and pedestrian path that winds along the Muskingum River. The Smith Trust also helped to pay for the city's aquatic center.
The second dedication on Friday morning took place at Fourth and Ohio Streets – the site of a greenspace restoration project funded in part through a bequest left by Ray and Emma Gutberlet. The couple also designated fund to be set aside for the armory restoration project and a portion of their undesignated funds was used to help shore up a serious budget shortfall.
City officials say the ceremonies were a way to honor these contributions.
