OEPA Holds Marietta Meeting on Cytec Cleanup
Posted on: 03/14/2010
By  Callie Lyons
This week the Ohio EPA will hold a public meeting in Marietta about future cleanup measures for the Cytec Industries facility on Green Street.

The information session will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday night at the Washington State Community College Community Room.
Ohio EPA representatives will present highlights from a draft permit modification and Statement of Basis for Corrective Measures, which proposes final solutions for addressing soil and ground water contamination at the site.

The Cytec site has a long history of use as an industrial property. Decades ago, when environmental laws were not as stringent as they are today, property owners disposed of industrial chemicals on site in ponds, landfills and other waste areas. Cytec’s specialty chemical manufacturing at the site ceased in 1996. And in 2004 the company was required to investigate and clean up contamination found on site. Some of the problems were addressed, but additional waste areas remain to be cleaned up.
Ohio EPA will take final action on the permit after considering public comments. Those who cannot attend the meeting may still submit comments to the agency online or by mail.
