Daily Rundown and Coffee Takes – 07/13/15

Tribe wins second straight over Rays

Danny Salazar didn't allow a hit until the 6th inning and The Tribe built a lead with the longball to pick up their second win in as many days over Tampa Bay. Cleveland improved to 20-18 on the road.

Jason Kipnis gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead in the 3rd with a solo home run off Rays starter Erasmo Ramirez. It was the only run the Indians scored in Ramirez 5. 2 innings and one of just two hits. Ramirez struck out seven and walked one but falls to 6-3 with the loss.

Salazar didn't allow a baserunner until a walk to open the sixth. He improved to 7-3, going 7.2 innings with 2 hits, 2 strikeouts, and 2 walks. By the time the Rays found the scoreboard against Salazar in the 8th with two runs, one earned, the Indians had built a 6-0 lead. Giovanny Urshela hit a 3-run home run in the 7th and David Murphy followed up with a 2-run blast in the 8th.

Cody Allen struck out two in the ninth in a non-save appearance.

The Indians won consecutive games for the first time June 2nd. As the mid-way point of the season approaches, the Indians stand 10 games behind the Royals in the A.L. Central, but are only 5.5 games out of the final Wildcard spot. They'll need to continue to string together wins if they're going to keep their postseason hopes alive.

The series will continue this evening in Tampa Bay. WJAW FM 100.9 will join the game in progress following the conclusion of American Legion Post 389/750 baseball. 7:10pm scheduled first pitch.

Pirates top Tigers in 14

The Pirates outlasted the Tigers last night as Neil Walker's RBI double in the top of the 14th proved to be the difference. The win evens the Pirate's road record at 19-19.

The Pirates jumped out to an early lead, with Gregory Polanco's sac-fly in the 2nd breaking the Buccos onto the board, and Starling Marte scored on an error in the third before Jordy Mercer's sac-fly made it 3-0. Justin Verlander made just his third start of the season, and went 6 complete, pitching to one batter in the 7th before exiting, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs (2 earned), to go with 3 strikeouts, 5 walks, and two hit batsmen.

Gerrit Cole went 6.2 and left the game in line for the victory. Cole gave up 9 hits, 2 earned runs, and 6 strikeouts with no walks. Andrew McCutchen singled in a run in the 8th to make it 4-2, but J.D. Martinez' 2-run homer in the bottom of the inning off Tony Watson tied the game and foiled Cole's opportunity to get win number 12.

Deolis Guerra would go three scoreless innings to finish the game and pick up the win, the first of his big league career. The 26-year old Venezuelan allowed 3 hits and struck out three in his third appearance for the Pirates. Walker provided the go-ahead RBI with two down in the 14th off Tom Gorzelanny.

Heat tonight's game on WJAW AM 630 as the series continues at 6:40pm.

Reds fall to Twins

The Twins pounded out 15 hits, 11 of them against Reds rookie Anthony DeSclafani, and went to to top the Reds 8-5.

Rain delayed the start of the game more than two hours. Torii Hunter put the Twins ahead early when the action did get under way, taking DeSclafani out of the park on a solo shot in the top of the 1st. The Twins scored again in the second before Eugenio Sanchez cut the lead in half with a solo homer off Phil Hughes in the 3rd. The Reds rookie allowed one more in the 5th on a Joe Mauer sac-fly, but ran into trouble in the 7th as the Twins put 4 on the board. DeSclafani was done after 6.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and 6 earned runs with 7 strikeouts and two talks. He would take the loss and fall to 5-6.

Marlon Byrd started a 7th inning rally for the Reds with a solo homer, his 13th. Ivan De Jesus singled in a run, Billy Hamilton scored on an error, and De Jesus came around to score on a wild pitch as the Reds cut the lead to 7-5. Mauer added another RBI and insurance in the 8th with a single, and Glen Perkins picked up his 25th save in the 9th as the Reds fell short.

Reds and Twins get at it early today. Pregame time on WMOA AM 1490 is 12:05pm.

Cavs extend qualifying offers to Thompson, Shumpert, Dellavedova

As the NBA's free agency period gets started, we'll take a bigger look at the Cleveland Cavaliers offseason more in depth in another piece. The league's Collective Bargaining Agreement is complex and can be confusing, and we'll require more space than normally afforded in the Rundown to lay out the Cavaliers options.

That said, the team extended qualifying offers to Tristan Thompson, Iman Shumpert, and Matthew Dellavedova yesterday, officially making them restricted free agents. Simply put, this means the Cavaliers will be able to match any contract offered to these players by another team in free agency. Restricted free agents have the option of accepting the one-year qualifying option and becoming an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. This is rarely done in the NBA, and probably unlikely for any of these three, as the accepting the qualifying option is a huge risk, as an injury during that season leaves the player with no guaranteed money or team in the NBA. Of course, the players are also able to negotiate a new contract with the Cavs during free agency as well.
