Daily Rundown and Coffee Takes – 08/27/2015

Indians top the Brewers

Jason Kipnis hit a solo homer and a two run double to lead the Indians in a 6-2 win over the Brewers Wednesday night. The Indians took both games of the two game set in Cleveland.

Cody Anderson returned to the mound for the Tribe after a stint on the DL with an oblique strain, and did so without making a customary minor-league rehab start. With Carlos Carrasco going on the DL yesterday with shoulder soreness, Anderson was forced into action without the benefit of a rehab start and came within two outs of picking up the win. The Indians rookie allowed an early solo homer to Khris Davis and a run on a sac fly in the 5th before exiting, racking up 4 K's along the way and holding the Brewers to 2 hits and 2 walks.

Kipnis gave the Indians the lead with his 2-run double in the 2nd, which saw a third run score via an error on the play. Lonnie Chisenhall came around to score in the 3rd on a wild pitch by Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson, who lasted just 3.1 innings and fell to 10-10 with the loss, and added an RBI single in the 4th. Nelson handed out more free passes than a struggling amusement park, walking 8 batters in 3.1 innings. It's like he had his Oprah moment and decided "you get a walk, and you get a walk, and YOU get a walk".

Reliever Jeff Manship got the win, working 1.1 scoreless for the Tribe, who will enjoy an off day on Thursday.

Pirates win over Marlins

Andrew McCutchen doubled in a run in the first and capped off a 6-run second with a three-run home run in the Pirates 7-2 win over Miami. The Pirates have taken two of the first three games in the four game series.

Jeff Locke was the beneficiary of the Pirates big inning in the 2nd, getting all the run support he would need to improve to 7-8 and then some. Locke went seven complete, allowing 2 earned on 5 hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk. The Pirates shelled Chris Narveson, who gave up 7 earned in 3.2 innings and fell to 1-1 with the loss for the Marlins.

Neil Walker opened the scoring in the big inning with an RBI double. Starling Marte and Chris Stewart contributed run scoring singles before McCutchen launched his 20th longball of the season. His 4 RBI put the perennial MVP candidate up to 85 RBIs for the season.

The Pirates have one more with the Marlins. Hear it tonight on WJAW AM 630 at 6:45pm.

Reds fall to Dodgers

The Dodgers built a 6-0 lead after 4 innings and 3 home runs and went on to a 7-4 victory over the Reds. Scott Van Slyke (solo), A.J. Ellis (2-run), and Yaisel Puig (2-run) each left the yard in the 4th inning off Reds rookie David Holmberg, who fell to 1-4 with the loss, lasting only 3.2 innings.

Ivan De Jesus scored one with a single and Brayan Pena's single plated two more in the 7th as the Reds would cut into the lead. Brandon Phillips singled a run home in the 8th as the Reds cut the deficit to 6-4. Adrian Gonzalez doubled in a run in the 9th to add insurance to the Dodger lead.

The Reds will have one more with the Dodgers this afternoon. Hear the game on WMOA AM 1490 at 12:05pm.
