Driving in winter storms

Snow, Ice, Sleet and more is on the way later this week and the basic travel tips have been released by AAA.  The first option is to simply stay home.  If you can't do that… leave early.  Taking a few extra minutes could be the difference between getting to work instead of getting stuck in a ditch.

Slowing down and taking turns at low speeds is a must, brake as smoothly as you can too, the earlier the better.

Be sure to stay away from other drivers the best you can while driving.  Tailgating drastically decreases stopping times and distances and when ice is on the roadway, running into someone has a much higher chance.

Using cruise control on slippery roads is very dangerous.  The system in your car will do what it has to do to maintain a certain speed that is set.  If your tires start slipping, you could lose control while the cruise control system tries to keep you going.

Emergency Alert System releases have been heard on our family of radio stations throughout the day today already stating that winter storm warning will begin at 7am tomorrow morning and last through Friday morning.  If you must be out, it is a good idea to carry an emergency kit equipped for winter weather.  This should include sand or cat litter for traction, a small shovel, flashlight, ice scraper and more.
