MARIETTA, OHIO- The on-going homeless situation has received a temporary solution, but there is currently no plan for a long-term solution.

The situation started in late-January after police presence was requested at the Armory, which was the original 'warming station' for the local homeless population.

Those using the 'warming station' were then moved in to the building at Gold Star Park on Harmar Hill Monday due to safety concerns, however; the move was short lived after numerous complaints were made about an individual who is believed to be responsible for the for the initial incident(s) that prompted the move.

Marietta Police Chief Aaron Nedeff says the acts that were reported were not criminal.

"This is one person we are familiar with," stated Captain Nedeff. "Reports were made that he was roaming the neighborhood and stopping folks to take him back to the center, but it wasn't anything that was jailable. There was outreach later in the day to get treatment for that person after he was released."

The city has shut down the 'warming station' and transported those using it to area hotel rooms. Marietta Mayor Josh Schlicher says the director of Washington County's Job and Family Services assisted with a temporary solution for the upcoming winter storm.

"We don't believe we currently need the warming station because the [warming station] population never grew past those that received hotel rooms," said Mayor Schlicher. "We need a long-term solution due to safety concerns but we do not have the financial resources or building accommodations to support that type of long-term care."

Mayor Schlicher reports the city is working to receive state and/or federal funding to provide a long-term solution.
