The Boys and Girls Club of Washington County received exciting news on March 18th about the Garett Scott Teen Center. Rebecca Johnson with the club revealed the big news.

"As you know, we've been fundraising for the Garrett Scott Memorial Teen Center and Music Program.  And, you know, fundraising's been kind of slow, so we're kind of bummed. We've been writing a lot of grants, and about a year and a half ago, we wrote a million-dollar grant to Sherrod Brown's office. And we just found out today,  a call from his office, that we are receiving a million-dollar earmark that Sherrod Brown got for us. It was signed into a bill today."

For those unfamiliar, the idea for a teen center started out as just being a music department within the current building at the Boys and Girls Club. Garett Scott was a staff member and was heavily involved with music. As a teen coordinator, he played a vital role in keeping the club going.

The plans were put on hold when Garrett passed away at the age of 25 due to a heart condition. The board then decided that instead of just installing the music program, they should go forward with the building of a new complex for the teen center for the music program to pay tribute to Garett. Johnson spoke about what today means for them.

"First of all, it's a big honor to be recognized at the federal level to receive a million-dollar earmark. Um, you know, a million dollars in Washington, D.C. may not seem like much, but in Marietta, Ohio, um, it helps us to break ground on the Garrett Scott Memorial Teen Center. With the other fundraising we've already done and the money we've spent in planning and getting the land ready, we hope to break ground before the end of the year."

The club intends to celebrate the award in a big way during the annual dinner on March 30th with the community. Tickets for the dinner can be purchased through the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County.
