Two-time WNBA Champion, Olympic Gold Medal winning, and Washington County native Dan Hughes will be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. Hughes will be part of the 17th annual induction ceremony that will take place in Columbus on April 20th. 

Hughes attended and graduated from Fort Frye High School before attending Muskingum College in 1977. He then went on to earn a Master's Degree in education from Miami University in 1978. In 2019, he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Muskingum. 

Looking at his coaching career, Hughes started as the Assistant Coach for the University of Toledo's women's basketball program (1996-97) and men's basketball program (1991-96). During his tenure with the Rockets' women's hoops team, Toledo posted a 27-4 record, winning the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championship and notching an NCAA Tournament appearance. Hughes also served in assistant coaching roles with the men's basketball teams at Mount Union College and Baldwin-Wallace College.

His WNBA career started in 1999. Hughes served as head coach of the Charlotte Sting for one year before moving to Cleveland to coach the Cleveland Rockers from 2002 to 2003. He then was the head coach of the San Antonio Stars for two different stints, the first from 2005 to 2009 and then from 2011 to 2016. His most recent coaching position was with the Seattle Storm, where he was from 2018 to 2022, winning two WNBA championships in 2018 and 2020.  He was named coach of the year twice in 2001 and 2007 and is third all-time in WNBA history for career wins at 281. 

Hughes served on the USA Basketball Women's National Team Player Selection Committee from 2009-16 and was an Assistant Coach from 2016-2021, including the 2018 USA Basketball Women's National Team that won gold at the FIBA Women's World Cup. In 2019, he joined the USA Women's National Basketball team and won the Gold Medal in the Tokyo Games.
