Last week, over 100 first responders from the Mid-Ohio Valley participated in a two-day training program designed to inform them on how to respond to emergencies involving individuals with autism. The training was hosted by UnPuzzled Parents Connect and the Marshall University Autism Training Center. We spoke with Whitney Price, the founder of Unpuzzled.

"We recently started a new program called the Impact Program, and within this program we are looking to impact officers and first responders to learning more about autism and just different strategies that they can use when they encounter somebody that's in an emergent situation or in need."

All first responders from Washington County participated in the training led by Dr. Jackie Clark and Kelly Franklin, representatives from Marshall University. Price wants to expand the project to first responders beyond Washington County.

Price said, "We are in our expansion project right now, and with UNP Parents Connect. We are a nonprofit that caters to families that have children with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities. And with this program, we wanna reach far beyond just the day of training. So the impact we lead with the vision of the world of acceptance, and that's what we're trying to do with this program.
We're trying to reach not only first responders, but medical providers, educators, and anyone that our community comes into contact with."

The goal of the training is to equip first responders with the tools to diagnose when an emergency involves an individual with autism and to determine how best to address the situation for that person.
