Daily Rundown and Coffee Takes – 08/28/15

Pirates edge Marlins

It took Gerrit Cole six starts to reach the 15 win mark after getting his 14th against the Nationals on July 26th. Cole went 7.1 innings in last night's 2-1 win over the Marlins, allowing one earned run on 5 hits with 4 K's to improve to 15-7. The five start gap between wins was the longest of Cole's young career.

Neil Walker had an RBI sac fly in the 2nd to give the Pirates an early advantage. Pedro Alvarez blasted a solo home run, his 21st, in the 4th to double the lead. Derek Dietrich drove in the Marlins' only run with a 2-out sac fly in the 7th.

Mark Melancon picked up his 41st save in the 9th.

The Pirates open a series tonight with the Colorado Rockies at PNC Park. Francisco Liriano will start for the Pirates, which is bad news for the Rockies, as the Pirates have won Liriano's last 10 starts.

Greinke, Dodgers blank Reds

Zach Greinke tossed seven scoreless innings and allowed only 4 hits and a pair of walks with 9 strikeouts as the Dodgers shut out the Reds 1-0 Thursday. Greinke lowered his already incredible ERA to 1.61 and improved to 14-3. He's running away with the NL Cy Young award. He's been so good that they could give him the AL award, too, in some sort of Price is Right "Showcase Showdown" scenario where he's done so well he deserves both big prizes. Heck, if this was the Price... and he performed in such a way, he'd deserve both prizes, dates with any of the models he desires, and three private performances from Drew Carey.

He's been great. He's your Cy Young award winner, no doubt.

Anthony DeSclafani was the tough luck loser in this one. The Reds rookie allowed only one run, which came as the Reds conceded a run for a double play, in 7 innings, striking out 6 and allowing 6 hits and a walk. Those kinds of stats will get you wins most of the time. Last night was not one of them. DeSclafani fell to 7-10.

Raisel Iglesias will take the hill tonight for the Reds as they travel to Milwaukee to open a series with the Brewers.
