MID-OHIO VALLEY (September 22, 2016) - Imagine waking up with a growling stomach and knowing you have nothing to eat. It's a struggle that millions of Ohioans and even more across the country know too well. September is Hunger Action Month, which challenges people to join the fight to eradicate hunger. The Ohio Association of Foodbank's Lisa Hamler-Fugitt explains, despite being a solvable problem, hunger's reach is far and wide.
"Some 48 million Americans, including 15 million children, suffer from the scourge of hunger. And in our great state what we see is nearly two million Ohioans, or one in six of our friends and neighbors, who suffer from hunger," said Fugitt.
And an estimated one in four Ohio kids lives in a household considered food insecure. Hamler-Fugitt says the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is the first line of defense, and argues that strengthening it – along with school meal programs – would go a long way to help those in need.
Poverty and food insecurity are both slightly down statewide, but Hamler-Fugitt believes much more could be done. She encourages Ohioans to get involved in fighting hunger.
"Think locally, act locally. Be involved by advocating, raising awareness, volunteering or donating your time, your talent or your treasure," Hamler-Fugitt added.
In recognition of Hunger Action Month, the Marietta Kroger is currently participating in The Great American Milk Drive. Now through October 15, customers can donate $1, $3 or $5 dollars at check-out to help deliver milk to a local family facing hunger. All money collected goes directly to 'Feeding America' food banks that serve the local community where the donation was made.
