The Athens Ranger District of the Wayne National Forest is asking for the public's opinion on a proposal to rearrange sections of the Buckeye Trail/North Country Trail and construct community trails near the Tecumseh Lake Picnic Area.
The Athens Ranger District in southern Perry County near the communities of Shawnee and New Straitsvile is the proposed project area. If the plan goes through, the Rerouting Project would cover over six miles of new trails and routes, as well as, nearly two miles of community trails to connect the village of Shawnee. Once construction is complete, Wayne National Forest would provide more unique hiking. One of the reasons of this project is to continue the reduction of motorized traffic on trails meant for civilians, as well as increasing the opportunies for volunteers to continue improvements for the trails.
To submit your comments, you can discuss the project by calling (740) 753-0101 on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Comments must be submitted by Friday, September 29th 2017.
